New Niger – Agriculture at the Core of Governor Umaru Bago’s Development Strategy
Agriculture continues to be the cornerstone of the New Niger vision. Under the leadership of Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, Niger State is making strategic investments to position farming as a key driver of economic growth, employment, and food security.
The administration has deployed 250 tractors and 50 combine harvesters across all 25 local government areas, distributed an additional 150,000 bags of fertilizer and other agricultural inputs, and expanded irrigation systems, agro-processing facilities, market infrastructure, and rural road networks to support farmers.
Understanding that agriculture begins with people, the government has trained over 300,000 farmers and supported more than 200,000 beneficiaries through various agricultural intervention programs. It has also allocated over ₦2 billion to expand the Nigeria for Women Project, providing livelihood support to an additional 169,000 women, while empowering youth through the Enterprise for Youths in Agriculture (EYiA) program.
These initiatives have generated thousands of jobs, established a 1,000-animal livestock feedlot to strengthen the livestock supply chain, increased food production by millions of metric tonnes, and attracted significant investments amounting to billions of naira and hundreds of millions of dollars, further elevating Niger State as a premier hub for agribusiness and investment in Nigeria.
