Niger State Councils Officials Receive Certificates of Return as APC Dominates Local Elections.
The Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) has officially presented certificates of return to 25 newly elected local government chairmen and their vice chairmen, following the council elections held on November 1.
The ceremony took place in the headquarters of the NSIEC in Minna on Wednesday and was led by Engr Jibrin Imam, Chairman of the Commission.
Imam announced that the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured all 25 chairmanship positions along with 271 councillorship seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gained three councillorship seats across various local government areas.
The chairman emphasized that the presentation of certificates marks the beginning of a new mandate for the elected officials, urging them to fulfill their campaign promises to their constituents. “This signifies the official commencement of your tenure. It is now time to deliver on the pledges you made to the people during your campaigns,” Imam stated.
He acknowledged the support of Governor Umaru Bago, his deputy, and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly for facilitating a transparent and credible election process.
In separate interviews, newly elected leaders expressed their commitment to serve their communities effectively. Dr. Mustapha Jibrin Alheri, the Chairman-elect of Chanchaga Local Government, praised the governor for ensuring a peaceful election and outlined his focus on security, youth empowerment, healthcare, and education, particularly addressing the use of drugs among youth.
Abdullahi Evuti, Chairman-elect of Lapai Local Government, similarly pledged to prioritize security and healthcare, noting partnerships aimed at improving access to medical services through initiatives like NiCARE insurance coverage.
Re-elected Alhaji Aminu Najume of Munya Local Government highlighted security as his top priority, citing a recent period of relative peace that has allowed residents to travel freely.
He expressed gratitude to Governor Umar Bago for creating a conducive electoral environment.
Finally, Ishaku Bawa, Chairman-elect of Shiroro Local Government, commended the governor for restoring peace in the area, which he credited for the successful elections.
He affirmed his commitment to collaboration across party lines to ensure stability and progress in Shiroro local government area.
The recent elections mark a significant period of leadership change and community engagement in Niger State, as elected officials prepare to tackle pressing local issues in the coming years.
