Enhancing Collaboration Between Journalists , Government Officials: A Call for Improved Accessibility.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, Comrade Abu Nmodu, has raised concerns about the limited access to government officials, which hampers journalists’ ability to effectively report on important developments.
This issue was addressed during a congratulatory visit to the newly appointed General Manager of Radio Niger, Malam Mohammed Kolo.
Comrade Nmodu acknowledged the current administration’s commendable efforts towards state development but emphasized that the lack of accessibility to officials obstructs adequate communication about these achievements.
He urged government representatives to view journalists as allies in progress and to establish a structured approach to facilitate better access, thereby enabling journalists to enhance their professional credibility.
Furthermore, Comrade Nmodu highlighted the NUJ’s initiatives aimed at combating quackery in journalism.
He expressed concern regarding the encouragement of unprofessional practices due to the patronage of certain individuals by those in power.
He called on the public to report any instances of quackery to the Union for necessary action.
In his response, Malam Mohammed Kolo thanked the NUJ delegation for their visit and urged the Union to take a proactive stance against uncredentialed individuals claiming to be journalists.
He underscored the importance of involving both the NUJ and RATTAWU during the recruitment processes in media organizations to uphold professionalism in journalism.
