50th Anniversary: NYSC leading in fostering unity among Nigerians- Official
The Acting Director of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) North Central Zonal Office in Minna, Mrs Abiodun Olubukola, has said that the scheme has been able to promote unity and discipline among Nigerians since inception in May 1973.
She said in an interview with newsmen shortly after staging a walk from the NYSC Secretariat to Mobil Roundabout as part of activities in commemoration the 50th anniversary of scheme in Minna on Monday.
Olubukola explained that one of the major achievements of NYSC was promotion of unity which was evident among corps members as well as Nigerians.
“There is a no state you go to in Nigeria that you will not see corps members of diverse ethnic groups, that has promoted the unity that the country needs.
“If not for NYSC, half of the corps members you see here will not leave their comfort or geopolitical zones to Niger state,” she said.
She added that the scheme had been able to promote discipline and free movement of work or dignity of labour.
According to her, there is no local government among the 774 local governments in the country that you will not see corps members.
She said the corps members had been helping in various sectors such as health, agriculture, education and engineering amongst others.
The acting director added that the scheme was also leading in nation’s building as corps members posted to different sectors were contributing to nation’s building.
She, however, called on the corps members to continue to promote NYSC in good image to build the nation as they were thought in the orientation camp and after their service year.
NYSC was established in May 1973 by the Nigerian government during the military regime to involve Nigerian graduates in natuon-building and the development of the country.
