Farmer Governor Umaru Bago Emphasizes Productive Engagement for Economic Development
Niger State governor and farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago has called for increased productivity among citizens as a means to combat idleness and bolster the nation’s economy.
He expressed this advocacy during a meeting with members of the Independent State-based Peace Architecture (ISPA), also known as the Niger Peace Committee, at the Government House in Minna.
Governor Bago emphasized the importance of stakeholders preaching in places of worship about transitioning back to productivity, highlighting sectors like agriculture and other economic avenues that can improve livelihoods.
He also discussed the need for measures to reduce reliance on certificates, advocating for a skill-driven society that promotes prosperity among citizens.
Appreciating the efforts of the National Peace Committee and the Kukah Centre in fostering peaceful coexistence, the governor highlighted the troubling lack of tolerance among people. He called for moral revival and love among citizens regardless of tribe or religion.
Reaffirming his administration’s support for peace initiatives, he directed the Secretary to the State Government to collaborate with the peace committee in establishing an office and to assist with a vehicle.
Governor Bago also hinted at developing a Niger State peace mechanism aimed at creating a robust structure to promote peace and patriotism.
Representing the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Niger State Chapter, Most Rev. Bulus Yohanna Dauwa, through Catholic Priest Rev. Father Bahago Dauda Musa, commended the governor’s efforts in insecurity reduction and peace restoration, noting that the support in establishing an office and providing a vehicle would significantly aid their community outreach across all local government areas.
Saka Azimazi, the technical adviser to the Kukah Centre, praised the governor’s role in national cohesion. He noted that the team’s mission is to continue peace campaigns and promote peaceful coexistence among Niger’s diverse populations, especially with the upcoming 2027 elections.
The Niger State Peace Architecture is chaired by Imam Muhammad Salisu Isah, with Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna as Vice Chairman. Members include Emir Ahmed Attahiru Gunna of Kagara, District Head Adunu Kabir Bawa, and Dr. Hauwa Kulu of COE Minna.
The National Peace Committee, led by Gen. Abdulsalami Alhaji Abubakar and based at the Kukah Centre, was established to promote peace, moral authority, and solidarity across Nigerian communities.
