NYSC Responds to Assault on Corps Member in Ilorin
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has addressed the recent incident involving a female corps member in Kwara State, who was reportedly assaulted by teachers at Government Day Junior Secondary School in Ilorin.
The incident occurred on November 28, 2024, when the corps member went to the school to collect her clearance letter. According to eyewitnesses, a teacher attacked the corps member, tearing her NYSC white T-shirt, and was joined by another teacher who allegedly slapped her.
Morakinyo Oladipo, the head of Information and Public Relations for NYSC in Kwara State, confirmed the incident. He stated that the NYSC would seek justice for the attacked corps member. Oladipo also indicated that she would be reposted to a different location to help her recover from the trauma.
The NYSC has informed the state government, which has initiated an investigation into the matter. “The NYSC expresses its displeasure regarding this incident,” Oladipo said. “Necessary actions will be taken against those who abused the female corps member, within the legal framework.”
The Kwara State Government has condemned the alleged assault, calling it unacceptable in society. Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, emphasized that the state government would not permit such incidents to disrupt peace in its academic institutions.
The Anti-Loitering Team of the Ministry, along with the Management Team of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, has visited the school to investigate the incident, and calm has been restored.
The Commissioner appealed to the management of the NYSC and all concerned parties to exercise patience, remain law-abiding, and continue to perform their duties without fear. The incident has sparked outrage among Nigerians, with many calling for justice and stricter punishment for the teachers involved.
