Niger State Government Orders Political Appointees Interested in 2027 Elections to Resign by March 23
The Niger State Government has instructed all political appointees and public officeholders planning to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign their positions by or before March 23, 2026.
This directive was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary to the Government of Niger State (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, following the release of the revised election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to INEC’s timetable, the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, with elections for state governors and state house of assembly members set for February 6, 2027.
INEC also indicated that political parties will begin their primaries on April 23, 2026, as part of preparation for the elections.
Alhaji Usman explained that the directive was essential to ensure compliance with electoral laws and regulations governing candidacy.
He emphasized that the law requires public officeholders intending to run for office to resign at least one month before the primaries start.
He urged all affected political appointees and government officials with political ambitions in the state to submit their resignations before the deadline to avoid breaching electoral rules.
The SSG stated, “I am to draw the attention of all Political Appointees and other Government Officials who desire to contest for elective positions that the conduct of party primaries is expected to commence from April 23, 2026.”
“In line with this development, all such Appointees and Officials are advised to resign their appointments by March 23, 2026, to meet the one-month resignation requirement before seeking elective positions.”
Alhaji Usman reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all political activities adhere to constitutional and electoral regulations.
