PDP to File Legal Challenge After APC’s Win in FCT Elections Amid Allegations of Irregularities
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formed a specialized legal team to contest the results of Saturday’s Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following a decisive victory by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC won five out of six chairmanship seats—namely Abuja Municipal (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Kwali, and Kuje—while the PDP narrowly secured Gwagwalada.
PDP spokesperson Ini Ememobong raised concerns about widespread irregularities, including intimidation, vote-buying, and the deployment of security personnel to influence result sheets. The party called the election flawed and warned of potential deeper problems ahead of the 2027 general elections. The legal challenge will be led by PDP’s National Legal Adviser, Shafi Bara’u.
INEC dismissed claims that voters were unlawfully moved to new polling units, explaining that only “split units” were created in densely populated areas to reduce congestion. The electoral commission reported over 239,000 voters participated—about 15 percent of the 1.68 million registered voters—an increase from the 9.4 percent turnout in 2022.
Despite concerns about voter apathy and alleged misconduct, INEC affirmed that the election showed ongoing public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
