Niger State Judicial Service Commission Enacts Major Disciplinary Actions Against Judicial Officials.

By Yahaya Zakka Minna

In a decisive move to reinforce accountability and uphold the integrity of the judiciary, the Niger State Judicial Service Commission (NSJSC) convened an emergency meeting on July 28, 2025. This meeting resulted in the dismissal of a Chief Magistrate, a Sharia Court Judge, and a Senior Registrar following the review of six petitions alleging misconduct within the judicial framework.

A press release signed by the Secretary of the Commission emphasized that the Commission is committed to maintaining a transparent and incorruptible judicial system. It also cautioned against the filing of frivolous petitions. These measures are aimed at safeguarding public trust in the judiciary and ensuring that all judicial officers adhere to established ethical standards.

Among the key decisions, Chief Magistrate Isaac Yisa from the Chief Magistrate Court in Kontagora was dismissed due to serious misconduct, which included allegations of accepting bribes to grant bail and failing to follow proper procedures in court proceedings.

The Court Registrar, Muhammad Alhaji Ahmed, was also dismissed for soliciting and receiving a gratification of Ten Thousand Naira (N10,000) for filing a bail bond and production warrant, further compromising judicial integrity.

Hon. Fatihu Hassan, a judge in the Upper Sharia Court of Wushishi, was dismissed for accepting an inappropriate sum of Eight Hundred Thousand Naira in connection with a land dispute case. His failure to resolve the matter promptly was cited as a significant violation of judicial ethics.

The NSJSC has also taken the step of compulsory retirement for Haj. Ramatu Suleiman, the Registrar of the Sharia Court in Bida, due to conflicts of interest related to her simultaneous employment as a Coordinator for RIFAN while serving in the judiciary. This was determined to be in violation of Section 58 of the Niger State Judicial Service Regulations.

Earlier, during a meeting on July 1, 2025, the Commission sanctioned several officials, including H.W. Sadiq Samaila of Magistrate Court II and Hon. Idris Alhaji Idris of the Sharia Court in Lapai, each receiving varying degrees of disciplinary action for their involvement in misconduct.

These recent actions by the NSJSC reflect a vigorous stance against corruption and a commitment to judicial excellence in Niger State.

Conversely, a petition filed against Hon. Sari Aliyu, Judge of Upper Sharia Court Salka, and his Registrar by Bar Solomon Iliya, captioned “Petition Against the Sharia Court Judges, Salka (Suleiman Aliyu), The Registrar (Saidu Idris), And Sani Aliyu (GT) For Issues of Judicial Process, Aiding Criminal Activities, Obstruction of Justice, And Other Gross Misconduct”, was dismissed.

The Commission found the claims to be unsubstantiated and subsequently issued a serious warning to the petitioner and the general public to refrain from filing frivolous, fictitious, and sensational petitions that could tarnish the image of its state judicial officers and staff, as well as using the courts to disrupt the peaceful coexistence of people of different faiths in the state.
