Mokwa Flood Disaster: Peter Obi Visits Niger State, Donates N20 Million.
Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, has donated N20 million to the victims of the flood disaster in Mokwa, Niger State.
Obi made the announcement during a sympathy visit to the government and people of Niger State at the Government House in Minna.
He emphasized that what affects Niger State impacts the entire nation, given its significant role in agriculture, which he believes has the potential to transform Nigeria for the better.
During his visit, Obi also mentioned the need to explore additional strategies to mitigate the effects of recurring flood disasters, stating that while these are natural events, they can be managed.
He promised to rally more support for the victims and offered prayers for the deceased and comfort for their families, as well as for the residents of Mokwa Local Government Area.
In response, Governor Mohammed Umaru of Niger State, represented by his Deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, described the flood disaster as “a national catastrophe.” He expressed gratitude for the visit and donation, calling it an honor for the state.
The Governor assured that his administration would continue its efforts to manage the recurring flood issues and raise awareness among the people to stay away from riverbanks.
He also reiterated the need for both national and international support to alleviate the suffering of the victims.
Additionally, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, represented by the Director General of the Niger State Babanna Border Development Agency, Muhammad Garba Danladi, expressed sadness over the disaster and announced the donation of a truckload of food items, including rice, maize, and millet, to help the victims cope with the crisis.
