Tragedy Strikes as Keke Kills Masquerade During Festival in Anambra

A tragic incident occurred at the annual Imo Awka Festival in Awka, Anambra State, when a masquerade was struck by a tricycle. Eyewitnesses reported that the incident took place as the masquerade was moving along the road.
According to witnesses, the tricycle operator was immediately arrested following the accident. “One masquerade was hit by a Keke NAPEP on Sunday, and his head was crushed. It was indeed a sad development,” one eyewitness recounted.
The Imo Awka Festival, which attracts visitors from both within Nigeria and abroad, is set to officially begin on May 19 and culminate on May 24. In past celebrations, the police have implemented measures to control traffic and ensure safety during the festival, but it is unclear if those measures are still in place this year.
The festival typically lasts about a week, with masquerades entertaining crowds in the days leading up to the main event.
Previous editions have seen incidents of fatalities, raising concerns about the safety of the celebrations.
