NUJ Niger State Council urges investment in modern media equipment and warns of threats to press freedom.
As Nigerian journalists joined their counterparts worldwide to mark World Press Freedom Day, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, Dr. Abu Nmodu, called on media owners to invest heavily in modern equipment, emphasizing that a free press cannot thrive without up-to-date facilities.
In a statement issued by the State Secretary of the NUJ, Comrade Usman Chiji, Dr. Nmodu noted that evolving global media trends present serious challenges for media organizations.
He urged owners, especially government-run media outlets, to prioritize acquiring modern technological tools to meet the industry’s growing demands.
He specifically appealed to the Niger State Government to upgrade facilities in its media outlets, including Radio Niger, Newsline Newspapers, Niger State Television, and the State Ministry of Information, especially to address challenges related to digital broadcasting and online news dissemination.
Dr. Nmodu emphasized that press freedom means giving journalists unrestricted access to information and enabling them to perform their duties without fear of harassment, intimidation, or threats to their safety.
He warned that restricting press freedom could weaken democratic values and hinder sustainable development and peace, noting that a vibrant press is essential for holding public officials accountable.
Highlighting this year’s celebration theme, Dr. Nmodu said it centers on protecting human rights and safeguarding lives and property. He assured that the NUJ would continue working with relevant authorities, especially security agencies, to ensure the safety and protection of journalists across the state.
Dr. Nmodu also called on government stakeholders to see journalists as partners in progress to achieve the goals of the New Niger Agenda—e-Signed Council Secretary.
