Kano Government Suspends Doctors Following Surgical Error at Urology Center
The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has confirmed that Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, died as a result of medical negligence at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center in Kano.
In a statement, Public Relations Officer Samira Suleiman disclosed that an investigation initiated by Executive Secretary Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda revealed surgical scissors were left inside the patient’s body after an operation.
The Board has suspended three personnel involved in the incident from clinical duties and has referred the case to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for further investigation and disciplinary measures consistent with professional standards and legal requirements.
“The Board offers its deepest condolences to the family of Aishatu Umar and condemns this act of negligence. We affirm that such misconduct will not be tolerated,” the statement read.
Daily Trust previously reported that Aishatu Umar died after surgeons allegedly left surgical scissors in her abdomen during a procedure at the government-owned Urology Center. Her husband, Abubakar Muhammad, stated that his wife suffered severe complications afterward, which ultimately resulted in her death despite repeated complaints.
This incident has provoked public outrage and intensified concerns regarding oversight and accountability in public health hospitals.
