NSCDC and Miners in Niger to Cease Hostile Interactions

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Niger State Command, has committed to fostering cooperation, collaboration, and coordination with mining operators to facilitate peaceful and harmonious operations within the state.
This commitment was articulated during a strategic meeting with mining stakeholders held at the corps headquarters in Minna. The gathering aimed to address challenges, promote collaboration, and ensure a secure operating environment.
State Commandant Suberu Siyaka Aniviye emphasized that the Mining Marshals are primarily enforcing federal laws to combat illegal mining activities in Niger State. He urged miners to obtain the necessary licenses and to report any violations for appropriate action.
Idris Abdullahi Legbo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Solid Minerals, reiterated the government’s dedication to creating a conducive environment for the growth of the mining sector, with the goal of advancing Niger State’s economic development.
Representing the miners, Mohammed S.D. Mambo, Chairman of the Solid Minerals, Miners, and Marketers Association of Nigeria, stated that mining is a significant employer and should be safeguarded by government policies. He denied any link between miners and banditry activities.
The Command Mining Marshals, led by DSC Mohammed Daniel Jibrin, outlined the legal framework, licensing procedures, and considerations for mining sites. They reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to protecting licensed sites and investors from illegal miners in Niger State and across Nigeria.
Jibrin noted that the establishment of Mining Marshals has resulted in increased revenue from mineral resources, with over 578 licenses issued, 500 mining sites registered, and the authorities taking control of illegal mining activities at numerous sites, including in Borgu, Shiroro, Mariga, and Lavun local councils.
Miners appealed to the corps, especially the Mining Marshals, to exercise discretion and fairness while ensuring compliance, and assured their cooperation to facilitate smooth operations.
