Terrorist Attack on Police Station and Church in Niger State
Suspected terrorists launched an attack in the early hours of Sunday, February 2026, targeting Agwara Local Government Area in Niger State.
The suspected terrorists attacked Agwara Local Government Area, killing one person, burning down the United Missionary Church of Africa (UMCA), and the police station.
It was gathered that the terrorists set the church on fire around 6 a.m, then headed to another village called Sokonba near Kabe, where a similar attack had recently occurred.
Reports also revealed that the terrorists stole various foodstuffs and valuable goods, resulting in the death of an elderly woman in Kabe town.
Speaking, Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese and Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State, Most Rev. Bulus Yohanna, made an urgent and passionate appeal to the Federal Government, the Nigerian Army, and relevant security agencies to immediately establish a permanent military presence in Agwara to prevent further attacks.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed in a statement issued in Minna that armed bandits invaded the Agwara community, attacked the police station, and were engaged by the tactical team on the ground. The terrorists used suspected dynamite to set the station ablaze after overpowering the team.
He added that the terrorists later moved to UMC church in the community, burned part of the church, and then proceeded to other areas, abducting about five persons whose identities are still unknown. Monitoring continues, and further updates will be communicated.
