Governor Bago Extends Condolences to Kogi State Over the Passing of Newswatch Co-Founder
Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has expressed heartfelt sympathies to the government and people of Kogi State following the recent death of Alh. Yakubu Mohammed, a distinguished Nigerian journalist and co-founder of Newswatch magazine.
In his condolence message, Governor Bago described the demise of Alh. Mohammed as a monumental loss, not only to Kogi State but to Nigeria at large. He highlighted the late journalist’s significant contributions to national development through his impactful journalism career.
Governor Bago recalled that Alh. Mohammed co-founded Newswatch magazine with notable figures such as the late Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and Dan Agbese. His involvement in establishing Kogi State further underscores his societal impact.
He also conveyed his condolences to the family of the deceased, the national leadership, and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). The governor prayed that Allah forgives the shortcomings of the departed, grants him Aljanna Firdausi as his eternal abode, and comforts his family and the government of Kogi State.
Alh. Yakubu Mohammed previously worked with New Nigerian and the National Concord Newspapers and served as pro-chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University. In 2025, he published his memoir, “Beyond Expectations,” offering insights into Nigerian journalism, the political landscape, and the circumstances surrounding Dele Giwa’s 1986 parcel bomb assassination.
