Senator Ireti Kingibe Decamps from Labour Party to African Democratic Congress

Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the National Assembly, has formally defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). She announced her decision on Wednesday, citing internal crises and leadership issues within the Labour Party as primary reasons. According to her, ongoing disagreements and a lack of cohesion have impeded her ability to serve her constituents effectively.
Kingibe stated that her move to the ADC was driven by the desire for a more stable and progressive platform aligned with her goals of effective representation, good governance, and inclusive development in the FCT.
Her defection positions her as the first senator and currently the only National Assembly member of the ADC, following the recent expulsion of Hon. Leke Abejide, who represents the Yagba East/Yagba West/Mopa-muro Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. The expulsion was ratified by the party’s National Working Committee due to acts of indiscipline.
The move may also signal a significant influx of federal lawmakers into the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections, as reports indicate that dozens of Members of the 10th National Assembly are contemplating departure from their current parties.
While no official declarations have been made, widespread speculation suggests that up to 107 lawmakers, including 21 senators and 86 House of Representatives members, may migrate to the ADC before the 2027 elections.
