It is often said that what matters in life is not its length, but how well one serves Allah and humanity. Many pass through the world without leaving a trace of service, even when blessed with opportunities to make a difference.
Colonel Sani Bello stands in stark contrast. His philanthropic footprint—ranging from free medical outreach to countless community interventions—can be felt across the length and breadth of Nigeria.
Born in Kontagora on twenty seventh of November, nineteen fourty two, he attended Kontagora Central Primary School from 1950 to 1956 and Government College, Bida between 1957 and 1962.
Colonel Sani Bello’s illustrious career began when he joined the Nigerian Army in December 1962. He graduated from the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, UK, in 1965. Over the years, he served the nation with distinction in several capacities. He was the Aide-de-Camp to the Nigerian Supreme Commander, Rear Commander of the former 3 Marine Commando, Assistant Quartermaster-General of the 3 Marine Commando Division, and Deputy Adjutant-General of the Nigerian Army between 1971 and 1975. His competence and dedication earned him the role of Military Governor of the old Kano State from 1975 to 1978.
Committed to duty, he was later posted to the Command and Staff College, Jaji, where he became the first Nigerian Principal Staff Officer before retiring from active service in 1979.
Retirement, however, did not slow him down. He chaired the Niger State NYSC and the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, leading the national team to the 1983 Commonwealth and World Championships. He later served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Zimbabwe from 1984 to 1986.
Upon returning home, Colonel Bello continued his service through leadership roles on the boards of several major institutions, including Law Union and Rock Insurance, Niger State Polytechnic Zungeru ,Globe-Re Insurance, Dantata and Sawoe, Amni International Petroleum, MTN Nigeria, and Mainstream Energy Solutions.
A humble businessman and statesman, his kindness and simplicity remain hallmarks of his character. He is a steadfast supporter of the Bida Old Students Association (BOSA) and a champion of educational development.
He is the proprietor of Mustafa Comprehensive School and the Sani Bello Vocational Training Centre Kontagora, not withstanding, he owns Safara Foods just to mention but few all of which have empowered countless youths with education, skills, and employments to achieve self reliant and sufficiency.
This administrator, statesman, philanthropist, and visionary investor, Colonel Sani Bello remains active in the power, oil, telecommunications, education, and media sectors. His media investments include Prestige FM Minna, Landmark FM Kontagora, and a forthcoming Sanbel Television Station known as ‘SANBEL TV Kontagora’, while his establishment of Science University Kontagora in advanced stage with full accreditation of its courses.
Among his most transformative initiatives is his annual free medical outreach under the Sani Bello Foundation (SANBEL Foundation), providing essential healthcare for poor women, children, and the elderly. Its life-changing impact speaks louder than numbers.
His humanitarian reach extends to individuals, communities, NGOs, and institutions through donations of transformers, financial assistance, and other interventions—offered purely out of compassion and devotion to humanity. These programmes have cost millions—perhaps billions—of naira, yet their true worth lies in the gratitude and prayers of beneficiaries.
In recognition of his vast contributions, Colonel Sani Bello has received numerous local and international awards to his credit. His influence in education, healthcare, and rural development extends well beyond Niger State and has earned special acknowledgment from his alumni body and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council among others.
The Sarkin Malamai of Kontagora is married and blessed with children who are excelling in their various careers. His legacy of service will surely endure long after his earthly journey.
