Northern Governors Accelerate Security Initiatives with Regional Trust Fund and Policy Reforms

The Northern Governors Forum (NGF) has announced plans to establish a multibillion-naira Regional Security Trust Fund aimed at effectively addressing the pervasive insecurity in the region.
This commitment was detailed in a communique issued following a joint security meeting involving all 19 Northern governors, including Niger State’s Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, and members of the Traditional Rulers Council. The meeting took place in Kaduna, focusing on regional and national security concerns.
According to the communique, signed by NGF Chairman and Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, each state, in collaboration with local governments, will contribute N1 billion monthly to the Security Trust Fund, with deductions made at source under an agreed-upon framework.
Acknowledging the impact of illegal mining on regional security, the forum recommended that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu direct the Minister of Solid Minerals to suspend mining exploration for six months to facilitate comprehensive audits. Additionally, existing mining licenses are to undergo revalidation over the same period, in consultation with state governors, to curb illegal mining activities.
The NGF reaffirmed its support for the establishment of State Police and urged legislative bodies to expedite this process.
Expressing solidarity, the forum extended condolences to the governments and citizens of Niger, Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Sokoto, Jigawa, and Kano States affected by recent attacks and abductions, as well as to victims of Boko Haram violence in Borno and Yobe.
The forum commended the federal government and security agencies for their relentless efforts in rescuing kidnapped victims and combating insecurity nationwide, pledging renewed support.
It also praised traditional institutions for their dedication to regional unity, security, stability, and development, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and peer review to overcome regional challenges.
Finally, the NGF assured that Northern Governors are committed to fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities to address the security challenges decisively and transparently.
