NUP North Central States Forum Advocates for ₦60, 000 nationally recognized minimum pension.
The Nigeria Union of Pensioners convened its North Central States and FCT Abuja Forum in Lokoja, Kogi State, to address pressing welfare concerns affecting retirees. The meeting, hosted at Zone 8 Guest Inn, saw participants engage in in-depth discussions about pensions and the various challenges faced by pensioners in the region.
Attendees praised some State Governors for their proactive stance in ensuring the timely payment of pensions and gratuities, as well as the inclusion of pensioners in the State Health Insurance Scheme. This initiative has been a significant relief for many retirees who depend on these funds for their healthcare.
The forum called for all state governments within the geopolitical zone to make the prompt payment of pensions and gratuities a priority. There was a strong emphasis on resolving the existing backlogs in many states, with members proposing that financially strained states explore loan options to facilitate timely disbursements.
Interestingly, pensioners indicated their willingness to cover upfront interest costs to ensure they receive their dues without delay.
Unity among member states and the Federal Capital Territory was highlighted as essential for improving pensioners’ welfare. The forum urged collaborative efforts to ensure that the needs of retirees are adequately addressed.
While acknowledging recent pension increases initiated by the Federal Government and some states, the forum pressed for the establishment of a minimum pension for all state and local government pensioners.
They advocated for a nationally recognized minimum pension of N60,000 to secure a dignified livelihood for retirees.
As the meeting drew to a close, gratitude was extended to the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress for their ongoing support in championing the rights of pensioners.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the interests and welfare of pensioners throughout the region, ensuring that their voices are heard in discussions with government authorities.
