Sultan of Sokoto Calls for True Understanding of Jihad, Denounces Extremism.
In a crucial address on Thursday, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, emphasized the importance of understanding the true essence of jihad, refuting the common misconception that it is synonymous with violence and terrorism.
Speaking at the public presentation of “Scars: Nigeria’s Journey and the Boko Haram Conundrum,” a book authored by former Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Lucky Irabor (rtd.), the Sultan called for a re-evaluation of Islamic teachings, particularly in the context of contemporary challenges facing Nigeria.
“The true meaning of jihad is not violence; it is about striving for excellence in every aspect of life,” the Sultan stated. He condemned the misinterpretation of this Islamic concept by extremists and ill-informed commentators who have long associated jihad with acts of terror against non-Muslims.
Jihad, he explained, is fundamentally about self-improvement and betterment—not only as Muslims but as citizens and human beings. “Islam abhors extremism, and no true Muslim can adhere to the teachings of the Prophet while endorsing violence,” he asserted.
The Sultan highlighted that true Islamic principles promote peaceful coexistence and good governance, suggesting that the teachings of Islam have significantly influenced Nigeria’s democratic evolution by prioritizing justice, accountability, and responsible leadership.
He underscored the stabilizing role that Islamic institutions, including mosques, scholars, and traditional councils, play in mediating conflicts and fostering civic education.
“We must remember that Islam is not about power grabs; it is about good governance and accountability,” he explained. “The core values of justice and fairness are deeply embedded in both the Qur’an and democratic principles.”
Further advocating for unity, the Sultan called for enhanced interfaith dialogue, asserting that mutual understanding between Christians and Muslims is crucial for Nigeria’s stability. “If I know who you are, and you know who I am, we can coexist peacefully. Understanding one another is fundamental to national security,” he elaborated.
The Sultan praised Gen. Irabor for his contribution through the book, calling it a timely resource that documents the impacts of insurgency and offers valuable insights for governance, policy-making, and national healing.
The launch attracted notable dignitaries, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, the Minister of Defence, senior military leaders, traditional rulers, and members of the diplomatic community, all of whom joined in discussions surrounding Nigeria’s path toward peace and unity.
