Accountant General of the Federation Partners with CITN on Professionalization of Tax Certificate.

The Accountant General of the Federation, Dr. Shamsiddeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, has expressed his commitment to ensuring the recognition of tax professionals in the federal civil service through the ongoing review of the Scheme of Service.
In a press statement from Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations, Dr. Ogunjimi announced this during a courtesy visit from a delegation of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), led by its President, Mr. Innocent C. Ohagwa, at his office in Abuja.
Dr. Ogunjimi assured the delegation that their request for the creation of a career path for tax professionals, with an entry point at Grade Level 10, would be presented to the Head of Service of the Federation.
He emphasized that tax professionals deserve recognition similar to that of lawyers, medical practitioners, and veterinary doctors within the nation’s civil service structure.
Regarding the nation’s fiscal outlook, Dr. Ogunjimi reiterated that Nigeria is on the verge of significant reforms under the newly enacted Tax Reform Acts. He stated that if these reforms are faithfully implemented, they will reshape the country’s fiscal landscape, enhance revenue generation, and close existing loopholes in the system.
Additionally, he revealed plans to transform the Treasury Academy in Orozo into a world-class institute that will train accountants to international standards, thereby promoting professionalism and strengthening revenue generation for the Nigerian economy.
In his remarks, CITN President Mr. Innocent C. Ohagwa congratulated Dr. Ogunjimi on his appointment, describing it as a result of merit, competence, and years of dedicated service. He urged the Accountant General to communicate the institute’s request for a defined career progression for tax professionals to the Head of Service.
Mr. Ohagwa also emphasized the importance of taxation in Nigeria’s fiscal and economic development and called for stronger collaboration between CITN and the Office of the Accountant General in staff training and capacity development.
He underscored that such partnerships would enhance the knowledge base of accountants, particularly in alignment with global best practices and the ongoing reforms in taxation.
