Mokwa Flood: Federal Govt. Delegation Pays Sympathy Visit to the Government and People of Niger State, Promises Humanitarian Support.

By Yahaya Zakka Minna.

A Federal Government delegation has visited Niger State to express condolences over the devastating flood that resulted in the loss of over 150 lives and extensive destruction of homes and livelihoods.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, led the delegation to the Government House in Minna.

In receiving the delegation, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago expressed his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for sending representatives to sympathize with the people of Mokwa affected by the flood disaster. Represented by his Deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, the Governor stated that the flood has left the State in a shocking and devastating situation.

He mentioned that efforts are being intensified to begin construction of water drainage systems in Mokwa and Mashegu council areas, as such measures would help prevent future occurrences. So far, the State government has provided 6,000 bags of rice to the flood victims.

The Governor also acknowledged the prompt response of relevant agencies involved in search and rescue operations and urged the Federal Government to establish a temporary camp for the victims, as their current living conditions are inadequate.

He further called for humanitarian assistance from cooperative organizations and individuals to support the victims, advising that all financial contributions should be directed to a government-approved account:
– Account Name:** Niger State Emergency Distress
– Account Number:** 2046096920
– Bank Name:** First Bank of Nigeria.

The leader of the delegation, Minister Mohammed Idris Malagi, conveyed the condolences of the President and all members of the Federal Executive Council, labeling the disaster as “one too many.” He stated that the President has directed that all available federal resources be deployed to address the situation and that steps are being taken to mitigate or avert recurring flood disasters in the country.

He also instructed the National Orientation Agency to carry out awareness campaigns to encourage people to avoid living near riverbanks.

The Minister commended the Niger State Government and other relevant agencies for their assistance in the ongoing search operations, noting that the Federal Government is collaborating to ensure a smooth operation.

Additionally, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Prof. Nantawe Yilwatda, who was part of the delegation, expressed sadness over the incident and assured that the Ministry would work to engage international communities for support and assistance to the affected individuals.

He also emphasized that the situation would be reviewed to identify and address critical needs.

According to statistics provided to journalists, 151 bodies have been identified and buried, seven people are injured and receiving treatment, 503 households have been affected, 265 houses have been destroyed, two major roads have been washed away, and three bridges have collapsed in three communities within the Mokwa local government area.
