Niger State Government to Begin Exporting Flower and Vegetables.
The Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has announced that the state will start planting flowers and vegetables for export, tailored to meet international customer specifications.
Governor Bago made this announcement after inspecting the greenhouses on one of his farms along the Minna-Bida road. He emphasized the vision to utilize greenhouses to provide vegetables year-round and to supply nurseries for other greenhouse operations.
To achieve these goals, the governor stated that methods such as hydroponics, drip irrigation, and other advanced farming techniques will be employed. The pilot scheme will initially focus on meeting the basic vegetable needs of the local population daily.
Governor Bago also highlighted his administration’s commitment to transitioning from subsistence agriculture to large-scale, commercial agriculture aimed at self-sufficiency.
Furthermore, he revealed that the state government’s partnership with Mastercard and other organizations has encouraged many youths to venture into farming.
He expressed appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the young people working on his farm, contributing to food production.
To enhance working conditions, he directed the establishment of living quarters for farm workers and the creation of a road network for easier access and movement of goods.
In addition, the governor interacted with the residents of Emiguye, the community that hosts his farm, and instructed the Secretary to the State Government to arrange for local children to be enrolled in schools in Bida.
