ALGON Urges Local Government Chairmen to Complete Documentation for Financial Autonomy.

In a significant development for local governance in Nigeria, the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has issued a directive to all council chairmen nationwide, instructing them to visit their nearest branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the completion of essential documentation.
This step follows the operationalization of local government accounts that will facilitate direct financial allocations from the Federation Account.
In a written communication dated March 5, 2025, and signed by ALGON’s acting Director General, Mrs. Evan Enekwe, the organization underscored the implications of the Supreme Court judgment delivered on July 11, 2025, which granted financial autonomy to local councils.
The judgment mandates that monthly revenue allocations to local governments will now be deposited directly into the newly established accounts at the CBN.
The letter emphasized the importance of adhering to due process, including necessary Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols, to ensure the effectiveness of these accounts. It urged council chairmen to promptly engage with the CBN to finalize outstanding procedures and documents, ensuring compliance with the Supreme Court ruling.
ALGON concluded the correspondence with a call for immediate action, expressing gratitude on behalf of their National President, Engr. Bello Lawal.
