IBB’s Book Launch, A Turning Point in Nigeria’s Political History.

By Yahaya Zakka, Abuja.

In a remarkable turn of events, former Military President Ibrahim Babangida openly acknowledged in his newly released book that Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola was the rightful winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, a declaration made 32 years after the election was annulled by his regime.

During the book launch, Babangida reflected, “Although I am on record to have stated after the election that Abiola may not have won, upon further reflection and closer examination of all available facts, particularly the detailed election results published as an appendix to this book, there was no doubt that MKO Abiola won the June 12 elections.”

The event, attended by notable Nigerians—including prominent business figures and former military leaders—also witnessed significant philanthropic contributions, with BUA Group Chairman Abdulsamad Rabiu donating N5 billion and General TY
Danjuma contributing N3 billion.

These donations, totaling N7 billion, aim to bolster the IBB Presidential Library’s initiatives for preserving Nigeria’s history and advancing research and education.

Babangida’s admission has ignited widespread discussions, with many acknowledging the historic importance of the June 12 election and welcoming this newfound recognition.
