Niger NLC Commends Governor Bago for Approving 80,000 Naira Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Niger State Council proudly announces that a historic agreement has been reached with the government, implementing a new minimum wage of 80,000 naira for all workers. This decisive action, which includes an additional 1.6 billion naira for the workforce, marks a monumental increase in workers’ compensation.

This significant development was detailed in a communiqué released after the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held at the Labour House in Minna on Friday, November 22, 2024, signed by the State Secretary of the NLC, Comrade Salihu Mohammed Rijau.

The communiqué clearly states that the 1.6 billion naira increase represents a staggering 700 percent boost compared to the previous adjustment, which saw the minimum wage rise from 18,000 naira to 30,000 naira in 2020.

The agreement also stipulates that starting in January 2025, the minimum wage will be implemented at 80 percent, transitioning from the 70 percent that will be in effect for November and December 2024.

Furthermore, the communiqué asserts that any salary shortfall for select health workers and employees in tertiary institutions will be rectified using savings from adjusted salary tables, ensuring that no worker will receive less than 20 percent of their September 2024 pay. All adjustments will be executed within the 1.6 billion naira budget approved by the governor.

The SEC unequivocally extends gratitude to Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba, the Head of Service, and the Commissioner of Finance for their unwavering commitment to enhancing the minimum wage for workers.

The communiqué further emphasizes that there will be opportunities for amendments before the salary payments in November 2024, as well as another chance for adjustments in January 2025.

Finally, the SEC declares that the salary template utilized by Abdulkadir Kure University will henceforth be applied to all state-owned universities, ensuring uniformity and fairness across the board.
