Minna branch chairman of Nigerian bar association condemns detention of minors

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Minna Branch Chairman, Isyaku Barau Esq., has strongly condemned the detention of underage children protesting poverty and hunger in Nigeria.

Isyaku Barau described the incident as “heartbreaking” and “disheartening,” emphasizing that it reflects a “national disgrace”

He said Nigeria, as a democratically governed nation, has failed to protect the fundamental rights of its citizens, particularly children.

Isyaku Barau noted that the right to protest is enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and does not require prior approval from any authority.

The NBA Minna Branch Chairman questioned Nigeria’s commitment to human rights, citing the Child Rights Act and international human rights charters signed by the country.

He urged the Federal Government to dismiss baseless charges of treason against the malnourished children.

The children’s only “crime” was protesting against severe hunger and poverty affecting millions of Nigerians. Barau demanded their immediate release and return to their home states, including Kano and Kaduna.
