Nine Family Members, Including Infant, Killed in Plateau Attack
At least nine members of the same family, including a two-month-old infant, lost their lives in a recent attack by suspected gunmen on the Kum and Wereng-Camp communities in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State late Saturday night.
Residents reported that the assault began around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday and lasted over an hour. During the attack, the community’s village head was critically injured after the assailants allegedly targeted him.
A resident told our source that the victims were slaughtered inside their homes during the coordinated assault, describing it as one of the deadliest incidents in recent times in the area.
He explained that the gunmen arrived in large numbers, firing indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Molders Association, confirmed the attack. He stated that the assailants struck under cover of darkness and inflicted violence on helpless residents.
According to Tengwong, nine family members, including a two-month-old baby, were killed, while the village head sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital.
He added that security agencies had been alerted and expressed hope that the perpetrators would be apprehended and brought to justice.
The attack has thrown the affected communities into mourning.
Residents are calling on the Federal and Plateau State governments to enhance security in Riyom and other vulnerable areas to prevent further incidents.
As of this report, security personnel have been deployed to the communities, but many residents remain displaced and fearful of additional violence.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Plateau State Police Command have so far been unsuccessful.
