Attack in Kirchinga Village Leaves at Least 24 Dead, Amnesty International Calls for Urgent Action.
At least 24 residents have lost their lives following an assault by gunmen on Kirchinga village in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The attackers reportedly raided the community on Tuesday, burning homes, shops, and places of worship, while leaving several residents injured and others missing.
Amnesty International issued a statement on Tuesday condemning the violence, describing the incident as “horrifying.”
The organization noted that, although Boko Haram has not officially claimed responsibility, the pattern of the attack and survivor accounts suggest the terrorist group’s involvement.
According to Amnesty International, bodies were scattered across the village after the attack, with many buildings still smoldering hours later. Several residents remain unaccounted for. The group urged authorities to increase efforts to protect lives and ensure justice for the victims.
In response, the Adamawa State Police Command confirmed that Commissioner of Police Dankombo Morris visited the affected areas for an on-the-spot assessment.
Police Public Relations Officer Suleiman Nguroje said the commissioner led a team of senior officers to evaluate the situation, review security measures, and strengthen collaboration with other security agencies, especially the military.
Nguroje added that the commissioner was received by the Emir of Madagali and the Chairman of the Local Government Area, during which he discussed the situation with community members, including those from Shuawari Kirchinga ward.
He also conveyed the police chief’s sympathies and assured residents of the police command’s commitment to restoring peace and increasing security in the region.
The police spokesperson noted that the exact number of casualties has not yet been officially confirmed and promised updates as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri vowed that justice would be served for the victims, emphasizing that his administration would remain resilient amid the fears.
This latest incident follows an earlier attack days ago, in which suspected Boko Haram insurgents allegedly killed three people in the Garaha district of Hong Local Government Area, heightening concerns over security in parts of Adamawa.
