NSCDC Commandant Pledges Collaboration with International Human Rights Commission

By Our Correspondent

The Niger State Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Suberu Siyaka Aniveye, has pledged to strengthen collaboration with the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) to protect the rights of Nigerians, promote peace, and foster dialogue and reconciliation.

The Commandant made this commitment on Wednesday when the newly appointed executive members of the Niger State office of the IHRC paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Minna.

Mr. Siyaka emphasized that both the NSCDC and the IHRC share a common mission: defending the defenceless and amplifying the voices of the voiceless. He noted that the NSCDC’s motto aligns closely with the IHRC’s mandate, underscoring their mutual goal of advancing human rights.

“We have found a strong ally in the IHRC, and together, we will work towards advancing human rights in the state,” said Siyaka. “We believe in peaceful conflict resolution through dialogue, engagement, negotiation, and reconciliation, rather than the use of force.”

He further assured the IHRC members that his office remains open to addressing any complaints about unprofessional conduct by members of the NSCDC during their duties.

Earlier, the state Director of the International Human Rights Commission Relief Fund Trust (IHRC-RFT), Shuaibu Awaisu Wana, who was represented by the state chapter secretary, Akawu Ibrahim, explained that the visit was part of their ongoing familiarization tour of security agencies in the state to explore potential partnerships.

Ibrahim stated that the IHRC-RFT is a voluntary organization with ties to the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The body is committed to promoting peaceful conflict resolution, human rights advocacy, dialogue, and reconciliation.

“The IHRC-RFT will continue engaging relevant stakeholders to ensure that all citizens, regardless of their location, enjoy their fundamental rights as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights,” Ibrahim said. “We encourage the NSCDC to continue defending the rights of the marginalized and to be a voice for the voiceless.”

In a similar vein, the IHRC executive members also visited the Niger State Ministry of Transport. There, Commissioner Alhaji Abdullahi Maje, represented by Permanent Secretary Mr. Lucky Barau, expressed the ministry’s commitment to collaborate with the IHRC to minimize human rights violations among its field officers.

“We fully support the adoption of peaceful dispute resolution mechanisms and are dedicated to advancing the protection and promotion of citizens’ rights,” Barau stated. “We are grateful for the IHRC’s visit and look forward to implementing changes that will strengthen our relationship with motorists in the state.”
