Police Arrest Suspects Behind Brutal Kano Family Killings, Says Nephew Led Group
The Kano State Police Command states that the group responsible for the savage murder of a housewife and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters was led by the woman’s nephew, following the arrest of three primary suspects linked to the crime.
The arrests were carried out during an intelligence-led sting operation ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and coordinated by Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.
Confirming the development in a statement on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the suspects were apprehended between 10:00 p.m. on January 17 and 4:00 a.m. on January 18, 2026.
“The Kano State Police Command has arrested three principal suspects connected to the gruesome murder of a housewife and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters,” Kiyawa stated.
The suspects were identified as Umar Auwalu (23), of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters; Isyaku Yakubu (40), also known as Chebe, of Sagagi Quarters; and Yakubu Abdulaziz (21), popularly called Wawo, of Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters.
Police said Auwalu, who is a nephew of the deceased, was identified as the leader of the criminal group and has confessed to participating in the killings.
“The principal suspect confessed to his involvement and disclosed that the group had carried out similar violent attacks in the past,” the police spokesperson stated.
The command further alleged that the same group was linked to other violent crimes in Kano, including the killing and burning of two housewives in Tudun Yola Quarters.
Recovered items include blood-stained clothing, two mobile phones belonging to the victims, a cutlass, a locally made club (gora), and an undisclosed amount of money believed to have been stolen from the scene.
“Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the group’s activities and identify other accomplices,” Kiyawa added.
The police praised officers involved in the operation and thanked the public for providing intelligence that aided the arrests, assuring residents that those responsible would be prosecuted thoroughly.
