Niger Information Commissioner Assumes Duty, Vows Renewed Commitment to Professionalism in Managing and Disseminating Information

By Abubakar Adamu Kuta

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Obed Nuhu Nana, describes the information sector as a crucial part of government, playing a strategic role in governance, community involvement, and strengthening connections between the government and the people.

He expressed this during his official swearing-in at the Ministry’s headquarters in Minna on Thursday, December 18, 2025.

Hon. Obed, who appreciates the trust placed in him by Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to serve as Commissioner for Information and Orientation, emphasizes that information management is about more than just announcements or publicity—it’s about building trust, clarity, and accountability. He also commits to providing leadership that will deliver measurable results.

“Under my leadership, information management will become a key tool of governance, supporting policy implementation, public understanding, and citizen engagement.

“Governor Bago’s New Niger Agenda focuses on reform, development, and renewed hope. Our role as the Ministry of Information and Orientation is to ensure this agenda is clearly communicated, consistently explained, and broadly understood by the people of Niger State.

“We must also ensure that the government speaks with one voice, guided by facts, discipline, and professionalism,” Hon. Obed stated.

He further explained that the Ministry would shift from reactive communication to proactive storytelling, aiming to showcase Niger State as it truly is—a state on the path of transformation.

“Our communication will emphasize impact, not propaganda; results, not rhetoric.

“Speed and accuracy will define our response to public issues. We will improve our capacity to respond quickly to misinformation, crises, and new narratives, always guided by truth and responsibility. Silence in the face of falsehood will no longer be an option,” he added.

In his remarks, Dr. Uthman Baba Alhaji, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, describes the new Commissioner as an experienced media professional. He notes that Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s decision to assign Hon. Obed Nuhu Nana to the Ministry of Information and Orientation was both appropriate and timely.

Dr. Uthman also mentions that the Ministry is fortunate to have a media expert leading it, believing this will usher in a new era of purposeful transformation in the information sector.

He assures the Commissioner of full support and cooperation from the Ministry’s management and staff to help him succeed.

The event included goodwill messages from senior officials and heads of parastatals under the Ministry, including the Niger State Media Corporation, Niger State Printing Press, publishers of Newsline Newspaper, Niger State Television (NSTV), and the Niger State Book and Other Intellectual Development Agency, among others
