In a hilarious twist to usher in the New Year, a Zambian police officer decided to celebrate in style by throwing an impromptu jailbreak, leading to the great escape of 13 detainees! Talk about ringing in 2024 with a bang!
On New Year’s Eve, Inspector Titus Phiri, clearly feeling the festive spirit (or maybe just too many “celebration” drinks), pulled off the wildest stunt since the invention of handcuffs. Word on the street is that he swiped the cell keys from Constable Serah Banda, proclaiming it was time for a “celebration of freedom.” Who needs a ball drop when you can have a police station malfunction?
In a flash, he unlocked both the male and female cells and reportedly told the bewildered suspects, “Congratulations! You’re all free to party – it’s a New Year’s gift!” And just like that, 13 would-be celebrants dashed into the night to ring in the New Year, leaving behind a very confused police department.
Inspector Phiri didn’t stick around to hear the cheers or the potential chaos he had unleashed—he was also last seen making his getaway. Maybe he had his own New Year’s resolution: “I will never supervise a lock-up again!”
This incident echoes a similar hilarity from 1997 when the late High Court Judge Kabazo Chanda decided to let 53 detainees walk free, complaining about the endless wait for trial. Seems like Zambian authorities have a knack for festive releases!
Commenting on this latest escapade, local lawyer and former presidential spokesperson Dickson Jere mused on Facebook, “I can’t stop laughing! Imagine the scene—like a bad cop comedy! But alas, I was reminded of that 1997 jailbreak party we had.”
So, who knows? Maybe New Year’s celebrations in Zambia will now come with a ‘jailbreak’ option! Here’s hoping 2025 is filled with less drama and more laughs!
