COP29: Niger State Government Signs Agreement with German Consulting Firm to Activate Carbon Market Potential
The Niger State Government has agreed with a German management consulting firm to unlock the carbon market potential of the state and to help attract one trillion naira in resources and investments.
This agreement was signed during Nigeria Day at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The Secretary to the State Government, Alh. Abubakar Usman led the Niger State delegation in signing the agreement.
He was joined by the Minister of Environment, Alh. Balarabe Abbas, along with his counterparts from the Regional Development and Power Ministries, served as witnesses.
As outlined in the agreement, the German consulting firm is expected to assist Niger State in building its technical capacity and developing institutional and regulatory frameworks.
Additionally, the agreement aims to enhance the carbon registry and establish global partnerships related to carbon market activities.
The Minister of Environment, Alh. Balarabe Abbas expressed enthusiasm about this development and urged other sub-national entities to follow Niger State’s example. He encouraged collaboration with the Ministry and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC).
He emphasized that this collaboration would equip sub-nationals with the necessary tools, data, and technical capacity to engage with Article 6 carbon markets, aligning with the implementation targets of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement
