*Democracy, Accountability and the Work Ahead in Niger State*
Democracy has been defined by various scholars in different ways, but the most popular definition is that of the late President Abraham Lincoln of the United States, who defined democracy as “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” From that definition, we understand that, in practice, leaders are accountable to citizens and should govern with fairness and consent.
Therefore, it is not surprising to see some Nigerlites voicing concerns, asking questions, and demanding accountability; they are well within their democratic rights to do so. However, we need to note two important points: first, on promises and priorities.
Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and this government remain committed to fulfilling the commitments made during the campaign and any promises made since he was sworn in. We accept that visible roads are only one part of a broader development agenda. Urban renewal, education, healthcare, water, housing, and reliable electricity are all essential, and they remain high on this government’s priority list.
As a democrat, Governor Bago recognizes that constructive criticism from young people, civil society, and all well-meaning citizens is healthy for democracy and for governance. But such pressure must be channelled respectfully and with facts so it helps, not hinders, delivery. Governor Bago values citizens’ input and remains open to dialogue.
Bago is human and imperfect, but the office exists to serve the people. He is not immune to shortcomings, where necessary, explanations are given and corrections made to do better. It cannot be said that this government has not delivered beyond expectations in just three years.
But as with every effective leader, success attracts higher expectations, stronger pressure, and sharper scrutiny. We reassure citizens of this government’s will to build on what it has delivered and to achieve more. All hands must be on deck citizens, civil society, and government to finish what has been started and to pursue the comprehensive transformation Niger State deserves.
