IHRC-RFT Urges Police to Uphold Professional Ethics, End Roadside Extortion in Niger

By Our Correspondent

The Nigeria Police Force has been urged to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability in the discharge of its duties, particularly in its interactions with members of the public.

This call was made by the International Human Rights Commission Relief Fund Trust, Niger State Directorate, in a press statement issued to journalists on Tuesday in Minna.

In the statement, the organization expressed concern over alleged unprofessional conduct by some police officers stationed at major checkpoints across the state. It specifically condemned acts of extortion, harassment of motorists, and the demand for bribes before allowing passage, describing such practices as detrimental to the credibility and public image of the police.

According to the IHRC-RFT, these unethical practices have significantly contributed to the growing mistrust and negative perception of the police by the public. The group urged the police hierarchy to strengthen internal monitoring mechanisms and enforce strict disciplinary measures against officers found culpable of misconduct.

The organization further cited instances where checkpoints mounted during market days have reportedly been turned into “collection points,” with motorists—particularly those transporting passengers and goods—being compelled to part with money in varying amounts before being allowed to proceed.

It warned that such practices not only erode public confidence in law enforcement but also fuel a dangerous narrative that undermines national security, discourages investment, and indirectly fosters criminality within society.

The group therefore called on the Commissioner of Police in Niger State to take decisive steps to curb these excesses by intensifying operational oversight, ensuring accountability, and sanctioning erring officers whose actions tarnish the image of the force.

Reaffirming its commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights, the IHRC-RFT stated its readiness to collaborate with security and law enforcement agencies to build a just society where the rule of law is upheld and citizens are treated equally, irrespective of social or economic status.

The organization, which holds a special consultative status with the United Nations, emphasized that if urgent measures are not taken to address the situation, it may be compelled to escalate the matter to higher police authorities to ensure that those involved in corrupt practices are brought to justice.
It reiterated that respect for human rights, ethical conduct, and accountability remain essential pillars for effective policing and sustainable national development.
