FG Responds to US Congress on Religious Persecution in Nigeria

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its stance that religious persecution does not occur in Nigeria.

Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, stated this in response to a report submitted by US Congressmen to President Donald Trump on Monday. The report, prepared by members of the House Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Affairs after extensive investigations and on-the-ground assessments, outlined concerns regarding alleged Christian persecution and extremist violence.

The report followed President Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and his instruction to Congressman Riley Moore and Chairman Tom Cole to lead a congressional inquiry into religious persecution and related violence.

Moore confirmed the report’s submission via his official X account, noting that the bipartisan efforts provided a clearer understanding of insecurity and challenges faced by Christian communities.

In his response, Mohammed Idris emphasized that no policy encourages religious persecution. Nigeria has consistently stated that no religious group is targeted amidst the widespread insecurity affecting the nation.

US officials maintain their position despite Nigeria’s assertions.

A statement from Nigeria acknowledged ongoing security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and communal conflicts, which have impacted many communities. The Nigerian government expressed deep concern over these criminal acts and extended sympathies to all victims and their families.

Nigeria clarified that it does not have, nor has ever had, a state policy of religious persecution. The violence faced by security forces is driven by complex threats such as terrorism, organized crime, and long-standing communal tensions.

The Minister reiterated that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and worship for all citizens. The government remains committed to upholding these rights and ensuring equal protection under the law.

Furthermore, Nigeria values its strategic partnership with the United States, sharing interests in security, economic development, and regional stability. The country remains open to constructive dialogue based on mutual respect, shared responsibility, and sovereignty.

The Federal Government continues to engage international partners through diplomatic channels, prioritizing the protection of all Nigerians.
