Senate Amends Clause 60 to Allow Both Electronic and Manual Result Submission

On Tuesday, the Senate amended Clause 60 of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill to permit both electronic and manual submission of election results. This change responds to ongoing public pressure and nationwide protests.

The decision was made during a plenary session after lawmakers reviewed recommendations addressing concerns raised by Nigerians about efforts to restrict electronic transmission.

Findings by POLITICS NIGERIA show that the amended clause requires presiding officers at polling units to electronically transmit results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IREV).

However, if electronic transmission fails due to network or communication issues, the manually completed result sheet, Form EC8A, will serve as the primary source for result collation.

This move follows weeks of protests at the National Assembly, with civil society groups and citizens insisting that electronic transmission of results is essential for preventing electoral fraud and restoring trust in Nigeria’s electoral process.
