Tensions Rise in Rivers State Following Wike’s Threats to Force Entry into Yakubu Gowon Stadium
Tensions heightened in Rivers State after the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, issued a warning that he would forcibly enter the Yakubu Gowon Stadium if the state government continued to deny access for his upcoming political rally.
Wike expressed concern that the situation could deteriorate further if access is persistently blocked, asserting that “heaven will not fall” should the stadium sustain damage.
The warning was delivered in Port Harcourt during the inauguration of senatorial and local government coordinators for the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, a group supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike stated that his team had formally requested permission to use the stadium but was denied, describing the decision as unprecedented.
He emphasized that political mobilization has commenced and Rivers State will remain a key player. “I told you that by January we would start engaging in politics. It is January, and we have begun. If they do not provide us the venue, we will take it by force.”
Wike also questioned the state government’s stance on President Tinubu’s re-election, asserting that loyalty, rather than financial incentives, determines political rewards.
