Lagos State Govt. Awards N40m to Families of Fallen LASTMA Officers
The Lagos State Government has awarded N40 million to the families of officers who died while serving in the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
The funds were distributed during a ceremony honoring the deceased personnel.
This decision was made during the agency’s 25th anniversary on July 15, 2025, when Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, acknowledged the dangers and sacrifices involved in traffic management.
Following this, the governor approved a support package of N2 million for each family of officers who lost their lives on duty.
Officials described the contribution as a symbolic recognition of bravery and sacrifice, emphasizing that no amount of money can fully compensate for the loss of life. The ceremony also marked the completion of all necessary paperwork and procedures before disbursing the funds.
Seventeen LASTMA officers reportedly died in service last year, amid incidents such as stoning in Apapa and a fatal collision with a trailer.
Olawale Musa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, noted that traffic officers face daily risks while maintaining safety on Lagos roads.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, stated that the event aimed to honor the officers’ memories, support their families, and reaffirm the agency’s dedication to road safety. Overall, 20 families received financial assistance.
