President Tinubu Orders Police Withdrawal from VIP Security to Enhance Core Duties
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a directive for police officers currently tasked with providing security for Very Important Persons (VIPs) across Nigeria to be withdrawn from such duties. The move aims to allow police personnel to focus solely on their primary responsibilities.
The order was announced during a security meeting in Abuja on Sunday, attended by top military and intelligence officials, including police chiefs from the Army, Air Force, and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Under the new directive, VIPs seeking police protection will now be required to request security personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, who are better equipped for such tasks.
The decision comes amid concerns over inadequate policing in Nigeria’s remote areas, where many stations are understaffed, complicating efforts to ensure public safety.
President Tinubu has emphasized his commitment to strengthening police presence nationwide, which includes the recent approval to recruit an additional 30,000 police officers. The federal government is also collaborating with state authorities to upgrade police training facilities across the country.
The security meeting was attended by senior officials including Lt General Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff; Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Chief of Air Staff; Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector General of Police; and Tosin Adeola Ajayi, DSS Director-General.
