Niger State Advances Agricultural Sector with New Strategic Framework for Sustainable Growth

The Niger State Council on Agriculture has reconfirmed its commitment to transforming the region’s agricultural industry through a newly articulated strategic vision aimed at sustainable development.
During the meeting led by Dr. Mathew Ahmed, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, stakeholders focused on the theme “Driving transformative and sustainable agricultural reform in Niger State: Bridging policy and impact to overcome systemic gaps.” Discussions centered on challenges such as low productivity, infrastructure deficits, and climate change impacts.
Dr. Ahmed underscored the necessity of bridging the gap between policy creation and execution, emphasizing that progress hinges on improved coordination, partnerships, and accountability.
He highlighted ongoing collaborations with development partners like AGRA, which include initiatives such as a $1.4 million rice system project and a $1.2 million Business Development Service program. These efforts aim to improve access to certified seeds, fertilizers, mechanization, climate-smart technologies, and business support while developing data-driven planning tools and enhancing financial access for farmers and SMEs.
Further contributions came from Engineer Bashir Tanko of Niger Foods Systems and Logistics Company Limited, who discussed private sector efforts in livestock and fisheries development. He outlined strategies for boosting food security, rural livelihoods, and economic growth, addressing issues like low productivity, feed shortages, veterinary gaps, and climate stresses.
Tanko emphasized the importance of improving breeding, extension services, and climate-resilient production systems to reduce risks associated with disease outbreaks and market volatility. His presentation reaffirmed Niger Foods’ commitment to fostering innovation, resilience, and sustainable growth across the livestock and fisheries sectors.
