Newswatch Co-founder Dan Agbese Passes Away at 81
Dan Agbese, a veteran journalist, columnist, and prominent figure in Nigerian media, has died at the age of 81.
In a statement released on Monday, Okibegbese, speaking on behalf of the family, confirmed the news, stating, “Chief Dan Agbese transitioned to eternal glory this morning, Monday, November 17, 2025.”
The family noted that burial arrangements would be communicated in due course.
Born on May 12, 1944, in Agila, Ado LGA of Benue State, Agbese was recognized for his influential voice in Nigerian journalism, renowned for his incisive satire and significant contributions to media development.
He served as editor of the Nigeria Standard and the New Nigerian newspapers before becoming general manager of Radio Benue in Makurdi.
As a co-founder and later editor-in-chief of Newswatch magazine, a position he held until April 2010, Agbese made a lasting impact on Nigerian media.
Up until his passing, he maintained weekly columns in Daily Trust and The Guardian, remaining an active and respected commentator on national issues.
He also co-managed a media consultancy with Ray Ekpu, Yakubu Muhammed, and Soji Akinrinade, demonstrating his ongoing dedication to mentorship and professional excellence.
Agbese is survived by his wife, Rose; six children; and seven grandchildren.
