U.S. Revokes Over 80,000 Visas in Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement Initiative

The U.S. Department of State has announced the revocation of more than 80,000 visas, impacting individuals from Nigeria and several other countries. This broad initiative is part of a concerted effort by the Trump administration to enhance national security and implement stricter immigration policies.

The announcement, made on Thursday, aligns with President Trump’s commitment to prioritize border security and was described by the State Department as “promises made, promises kept.” Officials emphasized that these visa revocations are in line with the administration’s larger national security strategy.

Data from 2024 indicates that the majority of the revoked visas were linked to three primary offenses: driving under the influence (DUI), assault, and theft. The specific breakdown of the revocations reveals:

– 16,000 visas revoked for DUI infractions
– 12,000 for assault incidents
– 8,000 for theft-related offenses

Other grounds for revocation included connections to terrorism, extremist activities, public safety risks, and violations of visa terms. A senior State Department official, who spoke anonymously, noted that these three leading offenses accounted for nearly half of the cancellations this year.

This initiative is part of a broader immigration reform effort initiated during Trump’s presidency, which has tightened visa screening and expanded vetting protocols. U.S. consular officers are now conducting more rigorous background checks on applicants, including scrutiny of their social media activity, political affiliations, and online behavior.

The announcement also coincides with a rise in deportations and increased enforcement of visa violations. Earlier this year, the department acknowledged that over 6,000 student visas had been canceled for various reasons, including overstaying, academic fraud, and legal violations, with some cases linked to terrorism suspicions.

In a sensitive aspect of this crackdown, officials revealed that at least six visas were revoked due to social media posts related to the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Furthermore, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in May that many visas had been revoked for actions viewed as hostile to U.S. foreign policy interests, directing diplomats to closely scrutinize visa applicants for any anti-American sentiment or political activities that could undermine national objectives.

Amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, officials have cautioned that both visa and green card holders may face deportation for publicly expressing support for Palestinians or critiquing Israel, as such expressions could be interpreted as sympathetic to Hamas.

This decisive action underscores the administration’s ongoing commitment to a strict immigration policy, emphasizing national security as a primary concern in U.S. immigration practices.
