Federal Government Eases Admission Criteria for Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced updated admission requirements for tertiary institutions, with the goal of increasing accessibility to higher education nationwide.
This new policy, revealed by the Ministry of Education on Tuesday, allows candidates applying for non-science courses to gain admission without needing a credit pass in mathematics, a notable change from previous guidelines.
This revised policy affects universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and innovation enterprise academies, aiming to reduce the number of qualified candidates who miss out on admission due to strict entry standards.
Under the new regulations, university applicants must achieve at least five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English, within a maximum of two sittings. Mathematics remains mandatory only for those pursuing science, technology, and social science courses.
For polytechnic admissions, candidates must attain a minimum of four credit passes in relevant subjects, including English, for non-science courses; mathematics is essential for science-related programs.
Similarly, candidates applying to colleges of education at the NCE level must have at least four credit passes, with English required for arts and social science courses and mathematics necessary for science, vocational, and technical studies.
At the HND and B.Ed levels, five credit passes are required, including English and mathematics, depending on the chosen field of study. Additionally, innovation enterprise academies must implement the same minimum entry standards as polytechnics for National Diploma programs. Notably, the National Innovation Diploma (NID) has been abolished under this new directive.
This initiative by the Ministry of Education represents a significant step towards making higher education more inclusive for Nigerian students, reflecting a commitment to adapting the educational landscape to better serve the leaders of tomorrow.
