Niger State Government Partners Mining Engineers to Promote Sustainable Practices Amid Green Energy Transition.

By Yahaya Zakka, Minna

The Niger State Government has announced its commitment to collaborate with the Nigerian Society of Mining Engineers at both state and federal levels, aiming to implement resolutions from the recent 24th International Conference.

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago made this declaration during the opening of the Annual General Meeting and International Conference held in Minna, the capital of Niger State.

Represented by Engineer Idris Abubakar, Head of Service, Governor Bago emphasized the importance of sustainable and responsible mining practices in supporting green energy initiatives, which are central to his administration’s objectives. He reiterated the state’s dedication to promoting responsible mining as a means to achieve environmental sustainability and foster human development.

Dr. Umar Hassan, the National President of the Nigerian Society of Mining Engineers, acknowledged existing laws but stressed the need for stronger implementation. He attributed current deficiencies to insufficient funding for the regulatory functions of relevant ministries, departments, and agencies.

He also highlighted that effective mining operations require enhanced security measures, particularly in remote areas where minerals are found.

Ms. Rose Ndong, the National President of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, praised the event’s organizers and emphasized the need for Nigeria to manage its mineral wealth to pave the way for a low-carbon future.

With the theme “Sustainable Mining Practices as Crucial Support for Nigeria’s Transition to Green Energy Sources,” the conference celebrated Governor Bago and other distinguished Nigerians with fellow awards for their contributions to society.

Dr. Hassan noted that the conference brought together key industry professionals to discuss the critical role of sustainable mining in meeting the growing demand for essential minerals needed in green energy technologies, such as lithium, copper, and cobalt. He expressed confidence in Nigeria’s potential to become a significant player in the global green energy supply chain through responsible mining practices.

The conference also addressed pressing challenges facing the mining sector, such as insecurity, inadequate infrastructure, and investment barriers. Stakeholders called for government interventions to strengthen regulatory frameworks and improve safety conditions in mining operations. They also discussed community engagement to ensure equitable sharing of mining benefits.

As Nigeria aims for a greener economy, the insights and resolutions from this year’s conference are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of sustainable mining practices in the country.
