Nigeria,Brazil Seek Enhanced Agricultural Collaboration to Achieve Food Sovereignty.

By Yahaya Zakka Minna.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has emphasized the importance of a strengthened bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Brazil as essential for achieving food sovereignty in Nigeria.

This assertion was made during his appearance on the Nigerian Television Authority’s flagship program, *Tuesday Live*, which centered on “Nigeria’s Economic Diplomacy with Brazil.”

Governor Bago noted that the recent visit by the Federal Government delegation, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed to draw lessons from Brazil’s agricultural success.

He highlighted the similarities between the two countries, particularly their agricultural strengths, pointing out Brazil’s achievement as a net exporter of key agricultural products like sugar, rice, and corn.

Bago reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to harnessing Nigeria’s agricultural potential, viewing food security not merely as a goal, but as a matter of national sovereignty. He indicated that establishing a collaborative relationship with Brazilian agricultural partners is pivotal to replicating Brazil’s growth in Nigeria.

The governor outlined the key areas of collaboration, which include investment in irrigation for year-round farming, access to high-quality seeds, improved farming methods, mechanization, livestock development, and initiatives aimed at increasing farmers’ incomes. These efforts, he believes, will significantly enhance the livelihoods of those involved in agriculture.

Concerning potential challenges, Governor Bago remarked on the need for cohesive efforts between federal and state governments, alongside agricultural networks in science and technology, aviation, and maritime sectors.

He called for enhanced support for the private sector and the establishment of consistent governmental policies to foster people-centric initiatives and sustainable international treaties.

Bago commended President Tinubu for his agricultural vision and unwavering support for state-level initiatives aimed at agricultural development. He mentioned that Niger State is set to benefit significantly from a $2.5 billion livestock development partnership with the Federal Government and Brazil, anticipating an infusion of $1.2 billion into the state.

With a focus on advancing its agricultural policies, Niger State aims to leverage its size and comparative advantages to transform its economy and ensure sustainability through a comprehensive exploration of the agricultural value chain.
