Chief Imam Urges Muslim Parents to Prioritize Moral Upbringing in Children

Chief Imam Attahiru Bala Dukku of the Morris Central Jumuat Mosque in Barikin Saleh,In a thought-provoking Friday sermon, emphasized the vital role of parents in shaping the futures of their children. He called on Muslim families to actively engage in the moral and educational upbringing of their offspring to foster responsible, productive members of society.
The Imam asserted that in Islam, the responsibility of nurturing children extends beyond fulfilling their basic needs. It incorporates providing a balanced education, both Islamic and secular, while instilling core moral values and life skills. “Proper upbringing is the best gift a father can offer to his children,” Imam Dukku stated, highlighting the profound impact that dedicated parenting can have on individual lives and the broader community.
During his sermon, Imam Dukku noted the troubling relationship between inadequate parenting and rising instances of criminal behavior. He pointed out that children raised in environments lacking strong moral guidance may be more susceptible to negative influences and anti-social behavior. “Family is the primary agent of socialization,” he said, stressing that neglect or inconsistency in moral training could lead to detrimental outcomes for children.
The Imam encouraged parents to serve as positive role models, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating honesty and ethical decision-making. “Children often mirror the behaviors they observe,” he explained, urging parents to exemplify the values they wish to instill in their children.
Additionally, Imam Dukku highlighted the significance of prayer in the parent-child relationship. He noted that regular supplication not only strengthens the spiritual bond but also provides guidance and instills faith in children.
“Praying for our children is a cornerstone of Islamic parenting,” he said, explaining how it fosters a sense of trust in Allah’s plan and reinforces the importance of shared spiritual moments.
Imam Dukku concluded with a call to action for parents, urging them to take charge of their responsibilities to ensure that their children are well-equipped to contribute positively to society and uphold the moral fabric of the nation.
