UNICEF confirms 150 positive cholera cases in Niger
In a concerning update, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has Confirmed that Niger State is currently experiencing a significant cholera outbreak, with a total of 150 confirmed positive cases and 16 fatalities reported. This alarming situation highlights the urgent need for public health interventions in the region.
During a recent advocacy visit to the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Farouq Bahago, Dr. Gerida Birukila, Chief of the Kaduna Field Office for UNICEF, shared critical insights regarding the ongoing health crisis.
She noted that a total of 451 individuals have been isolated for observation, with 150 cases confirmed positive through rapid diagnostic testing. Fortunately, these patients have received treatment and have subsequently been discharged.
Dr. Birukila, represented by Health Specialist Dr. Ahmed Tsofo, called for the Emir’s support in addressing various health challenges confronting the state. She emphasized, “We have recorded more than 451 cases of cholera infections, out of which over 150 were confirmed positive through rapid diagnostic testing.”
In addition to cholera, Dr. Birukila stressed the importance of increasing awareness about polio and measles and improving the rates of exclusive breastfeeding in the region.
She reiterated UNICEF’s commitment to ongoing health interventions and sought the Emir’s endorsement for upcoming initiatives, including a polio eradication campaign and the introduction of measles and rubella vaccines planned for October.
The collaboration between governmental bodies and traditional leadership is deemed essential for effectively addressing these public health issues.
In response, Emir Alhaji Farouq Bahago expressed his commitment to supporting UNICEF’s health interventions, stating, “We will continue to talk and work in the interest of our people. We will support your efforts and complement your activities in all four areas of intervention.”
